Abstract
We conducted a retrospective cohort study to determine the effects of prophylactic agents(hydroxychloroquine, primaquine) on a forward battalion where malaria patients have sharply increased over the past three years. A person-month and an average incidence density were calculated by dividing the soldiers into control and experimental groups, and then observing them from 12 months to 24 months, before and after the issuing of prophylatic agents.
The results show 40 control patients and 7 experimental patients, with the incidence density dropping from 19.37 to 3.39. Especially, Unit B and Unit C, each show a significant decrease from 25.04 to 6.26 and from 56.34 to 8.05, respectively. These 1,203 and 1,836 enlisted soldiers, as research models, were given prophylatic agents. The total costs for these agents were approximately \2.18million and \9.28million. The treatment cost for malaria patients hospitalized in a military hospital facility, were \9.30million and \1.63million. Also, in order to make an indirect estimate of the cost-effectiveness of issuing prophylatic agents, and to determine the optimal level of issuing prophylatic agents, thereby comparing the costs according to 4 groups, the incidence density(24 month, 1000person) of 15 to 20 turned out to be the recommended prophylatic agent issuing standard.
